This program is an anniversary show that creates a connection between traditional flamenco and classical music. In addition, it shows the latest artistic developments from the collaboration between Spanish artists living in Austria and Johanna Beisteiner.
Exactly 101 years ago, on June 13, 1922, the singing competition “1er Concurso de Cante Jondo” took place in Granada, a milestone in the history of flamenco. This event, initiated by Manuel de Falla, Federico García Lorca and other intellectuals, made a decisive contribution to flamenco being internationally recognized as an art and finding its way into renowned theaters. As a tribute to the protagonists of this competition, the flamenco dancer Maria-Luisa Rizo, who was born in Seville and lives in Austria, has put together a program with her own choreographies for compositions that are all at least 100 years old and are still among the highlights in the repertoire of today’s musicians. She is accompanied by two artists from southern Spain: Monica Clavijo (flamenco singing) and Luis Cristobal (flamenco guitar) as well as by the Austrian concert guitarist and singer Johanna Beisteiner, who also dances flamenco and creates a connection between traditional flamenco and classical music in her interpretations.
